Everyone seems to have his or her own definition of communication.
The National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) offers its professional definition of school PR as: "Educational public relations is a planned and systematic management function to help improve the programs and services of an educational organization. It relies on a comprehensive two-way communications process involving both internal and external publics, with a goal of stimulating a better understanding of the role, objectives, accomplishments and needs of the organization. Educational public relations programs assist in interpreting public attitudes, identify and help shape policies and procedures in the public interest, and carry on involvement and information activities which earn public understanding and support."
NSPRA's definition works for other business sectors as it is the foundation for communication.
Unfortunately, every industry has developed it own lingo, buzz words if you will. Each is like a raw onion. Peal away the skin (buzzwords) and what do you find, but an onion. No need to peel the onion and shed tears, if the message is clear and easy to understand.
We believe in keeping communication simple.
First, you need to decide who (the public, if you really need a PR buzzword) you want to talk to and what do you want them to do.
Then you research (the first step in the public relations process: research, plan, communicate and evaluate) how those people best receive information and plan (step two) the best tools to use to get the results you hope for. You communicate (step three) and evaluate (step four).
